My name is Alexander P. Dowson (as you’ve probably guessed), although for the sake of saving time you can call me Alex. I’m an artist, which isn’t something I’m use to referring to myself as, simply because I’ve only just started. I don’t know specifically what my work will be about or what I will achieve, I just know that I’ll keep doing it because I enjoy it.
I’m not an art student, and I have no qualifications in art, instead I’ve taught myself through the use of books, the internet and most of all, practice. I find I particularly enjoy using graphite and drawing animals, so you can expect to see plenty more of that in the future, however recently I’ve been exploring other mediums such as oil paint, watercolour, and ink. I’ve also been exploring more abstract ideas for my art, as well as the steampunk style which I’m a huge fan of.
I’m actually business student, and a few months ago I was ongoing a module on Entrepreneurship in which the assignment was to create an idea for a business which I found very interesting, however I was stuck on ideas. In the past I had drawn a few pieces in my free time, however I never considered turning it into a business. I first played around with some ideas such as making cards or designing t-shirts, but then I showed my lecturer some of my work and he simply said “just do that!” And from there I started generating ideas of how I can do something I greatly enjoy as a career, and over time my passion grew more and more to a point where all I want to do is this. And so here I am, on DeviantArt, with my work spread over the internet, trying to make it happen. And thank you Nigel Groser (my lecturer), for believing that this could be possible.
For now I’m going to continue to create 2D art and post it here on my website and social media accounts, as well as posting the occasional blog post, however I have a few plans for the future, one of which is creating an online store to support myself. Other more ambitious plans include starting a web-comic series, creating stop-motion animations, tutorials, and hopefully one day a graphic novel which will focus heavily on the steampunk style. But for now, this is me, this is what I do and if you like it then I hope to see you again in the future.
